NEWS FROM THE MID-ATLANTIC
By Susan Hoke

Hello again,

I apologize to everyone for the absence of this column from the last issues, but unfortunately, many circumstances in my life zapped my energies. It was so nice to hear from those who have moved from the area and call to say hello. Debbie Witmer sends her fond greetings to everyone. Debbie moved to Kentucky last year. Her stylish bitch, Dozydanes Dear Abby is busy earning her points toward her championship. "Abby" received the judges’ nod several times during the Cherry Blossom circuit, Delaware Water Gap KC and at shows in Maine. Debbie’s home was recently struck by a tornado. Thankfully no one was injured.

Wayne and Mary Ellen Bunting send their regards. They moved several years ago from Delaware and are now in picturesque Montana.

In Show News ~ The spring shows are proceeding hot and heavy. The lovely harlequin bitch, Riverwood Brynne Jersey, owner-handled by Kelly Kinsey has stolen judges’ hearts and earned 2 four point majors. Way to go!!

Speaking of Harls- It is harl-o-mania here in our area. Several tried and true fawn and brindle owners are seeing spots before their eyes. Congratulations to the new "spotified" households pf Pat & Ron Monico, Rita, Bill & Jennifer Suddarth, Hope Miller, Karen & Dale Desjardins, and others who shall remain nameless. And of course, never should we forget those experienced harley owners. Our congrats go to Tim & Debbi Jones on their newest addition.

Word is out that Bernadette Cosgrove is as pleased as punch over her first harl litter. The puppies are knock-your-socks off gorgeous. Good going Bernadette! All that hard work makes them just sparkle and shine!!!

Our region was busy this past year and many dogs owned by people in our region placed in the top ten in the nation. Top honors went to BIS BISS Ch Auldmoor’s Almost An Angel. "Liz" is owned by Bill & and Diana Brown, Donna Crane, Pat Zator, & Mimi Graff. "Liz" is really on a roll this year too. Congrats to all the owners.

Our own BIS BISS Ch Jamara’s High Voltage was 3rd in the Breed and # 1 in the Group System. For those of you who have called asking how "Wattson" is doing, we would like to thank you for your concern and let you know that he is doing great. He has never had a bad day since his surgery. We all appreciate your concern.

Wm Urban phoned to let us know that our friend, Bob Yavorski is in the hospital. Bob is going through a very rough time. Please take the time out of your day and send him a card of encouragement and let him know that you care. I am certain that he and Barb would be glad to hear from you. For those of you who do not know, Barb and Bob have raised blacks for a long time under the kennel name "Sundown". Our prayers are with you BOB!

Patti & Dave Witmer have an exciting new blue litter out of Am Can Ch Loxley’s Garth of Wyntrebrook x Ch Davicia Precious Blue Opal. They are so excited! You can see their puppies on-line here in the Litterbox Section of Dane World On-Line. Go to http://www.daneworld.com/quarterly/litterbb.htm .

Congrats to the Olivera’s on their litter out of Ch Andiamo’s Lady in Red. "Scarlet" has 3 fawn males out of BIS BISS Ch Jamara’s High Voltage. Scarlet had a tough delivery, but last word was that all are doing fine.

Here at Jamara we are anxiously awaiting our new arrivals. We are looking forward to our new "Wattson" kids.

I am reading a great book for all animal lovers: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. It makes you a laugh and cry. It you have the opportunity to get it give it a try.

It is with sadness that we say farewell to our friend and fellow competitor - Wayne Johnson. Wayne passed away while on vacation and will be remembered for his love for his special boy "Danny" - Ch Wyntrebrook’s Sun Dancer. It was truly wonderful to see the joy on Wayne’s face as he watched "Danny" in the ring. Wayne was one of the first people to call us when he heard the news about "Wattson’s" surgery. His presence ringside and in our lives will be missed.

This area is proud to claim to it’s credit a large number of new champions. Doris Bryan and Judith Parr finished their red hot gal "Flame" - Ironclouds Flamingo v Redstar. We hear that she also won a breed soon thereafter. Not following far behind is Flame’s littermate, Ironcloud’s Red Hot Cargo. Capturing his last major at the GDC of Western Pa, Ch. Jamara’s Reason to Believe, sent his owners, Greg & Karen Quatman straight thru the roof jumping for joy. Congratulations on your first champion!

Chris and Don Balsbaugh’s BISS Dee Dee’s Virginia Gentleman - AKA "Shooter", recently captured his 3rd major at the Old Dominion KC and then followed with another 2 points and a Breed from the Classes just 2 weeks later. I believe this "Gentleman" just needs a single to finish!  "Shooter" was bred by Darthy Davis.

Stephanie Gallups and Tonie Gerhardt have really been racking up the points on their "kids". To quote Stephanie, she is on a mission. They finished their bitch, Harley D’s Rosez Birthday Gift and followed that up by going Winners Bitch and BOW at the GDC of Maryland with a sister, Harley D. Hardt’s Electra Glide. Stephanie and Tonie are truly excited that so many of their Harley kids are pointed. Roaring toward the finish line are: Harley D Hardt’s Xmas Cruz, Harley D Hardt’s Sturgis, Harley D’s Leather and Lace v Kenya, Harley D’s Hildegarde So-Right and last but certainly not least, Harley D’s Hardt Throb. What? More to come? Watch out! Flash! Sturgis received the nod for 2 more points at Carroll KC. Yea Sturgis!!!

While still on the subject of new Champions, we can’t forget Brandelyn’s Summer Storm. Owned by Tim & Debbi Jones and Andrea Howarth, She completed her championship by earning her second major at Chester Valley KC under Breeder Judge: Margaret Shappard.

Not to be outdone, the stately brindle dog, Nikolodean’s Com’n Around Again, owned by Peggy Webber Clark, finished his championship at the Great Dane Club of Raritan Valley. I hear that there is a sweet story connected with this young dog. Perhaps if you ask Peggy, she will tell you.

Ch Diamond’s Gen’l ‘Lectric*, owners Nancy Bosley and Susan Hoke, stood still long enough to add the Ch to the front of his name. "GE" finished at the GDC of Central PA. It has been an amazing experience showing this young dog. Nancy & I send our thanks to his breeders Karen & Bernard Martin for this young guy!

Also having rounded up all of her points to hold the honored title of Champion is my own Toto’s Sabrina v Kacheke. "Babe" is a terrific showgirl and I love owning her. Babe was co-owned by me with Linda Pullen. Her breeders Leslie Snyder-DeLeon & Francette Lass can be quite proud of this typey bitch.

Judith Parr is never blue when she thinks of her lovely blue bitch, Bell Danes Blonde Over Blue. Blondie captured a major over the Tar Heel Circuit.

Jamara’s Ricochet is rapidly moving onward to the title by gathering more points at the spring shows. Owners Dale Andress and Thomas Ciecka smile all over when they watch him and his lovely housemate Harley D’s Chase My Hardt in the ring. Needing her second major, it won’t be long until she’ll add the Ch. to her name.

It was at the Trenton KC that Warren & Cyndy Simon’s fawn dog, Misty Valley’s Logical Choice, captured another win. Way to go!!

Bucks and Trenton weekend was a spectacular time for Debra Grady’s. Harttug’s Princess v Danair. This pristine lass was WB at the Great Dane Club of Raritan Valley, Bucks and Trenton!! All in one weekend - and, at the Bucks Show she went Breed from the classes. Wow!! I’ll bet that this was a weekend Debra Grady will remember for a long time.

The Spring Specialties are now over and the results are:

And so on this note, I sign off. If I missed your wins, it was either that I wasn’t there, I didn’t hear the news by word of mouth or YOU didn’t report it to me personally. So please send me you news!!

Looking forward to a bright tomorrow,

SAD NEWS FROM THE DANE FRONT

With great sadness I report the loss of Wayne Johnson; a gentleman, competitor, and frequent visitor to the southern shows. Our deepest sympathies to his family. He will be missed.

Heard just recently of the passing of Charlie Most. I know I’m voicing the sympathies of many regarding the sad loss of an icon of the Dane world.

A REQUEST FROM THIS ROVING REPORTER

Due to my recent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, I will not be attending shows for a few months. I must rely on the attendees of the southern shows to provide reports of wins, brags, and miscellaneous news that you, my eyes and ears during my recovery, provide. Please e-mail any juicy stuff to ginnylin@aol.com (reports of wins are also welcome).

Also a sincere thank you to Jane Farmer, who dropped everything and drove 2 ½ hrs down to my house to help with this column. You can imagine how long it would have taken typing with one finger.

NEWS FROM WAY UP NORTH
by Sue Wyne

We’ve enjoyed the most beautiful Spring and early Summer any of us sourdough’s can remember. Sourdough is an Alaskan term for folks who’ve lived here a very long time. Most of us in the Dane world qualify.

March 28 we gathered at the Egan Center for Mrs. Helen James judging. Her WD was AQWyne Chaney Moos On the Loos bred by Annique Smith, Sue Wyne & Carol Ann Chaney owned by Annique & Bill Smith. RWD was Macy’s Blue Santa bred by Mary & Jeff Macy owned by Jamie Sue Koop. WB BOW was Alyeska Delta-Billie’s Girl bred by Jackie Jordan & Billie Puckett owned by Jackie. RWB was Laurado’s Irish Ms Teegan bred and owned by Katie Edwards. BOB was Ch. Wyne Chaney’s So Far So Good bred by Sue Wyne & Carol Ann Chaney owned by Sue. BOS was Ch. AQWyne Chaney’s Wiley Cody bred by the threesome Annique, Sue & Carol owned by Hank & Georgia Williams.

March 29, Mrs. Doniere found her WD in the puppy class awarding Wyne AQ Chaney’s Along for T’Ryde the major with RWD going to AQWyne Chaney’s Moos on T’Loos. WB BOW as AQWyne Chaney Madam Gazelle, sister to RWD for the major. BOB was again the lovely Ch. Wyne Chaney’s So Far So Good with BOS going to Ch. AQWyne Chaney’s Wiley Cody.

We fast forward now into the Spring shows held in Fairbanks, AK. The interior of Alaska usually the warmest weather with the longest days during summer. We had all of those over Memorial Day weekend.

May 23rd Judge Les Mapes began the weekend by awarding Wyne AQ Chaney Along for T’Ryde WD BOW from the Bred By class. RWD was AQWyne Chaney Moos on T’Loos. WB BOS over a Special was Wyne AQChaney L’l Bit O’Sunshne who is the lovely sister of BOB winner. RWB was Laurado’s Irish Ms Teegan. BOB was Ch. AQWyne Chaney’s Wiley Cody.

May 24th Judge Mrs. Loraine Boutwell also found the Bred By young dog for WD Wyne AQ Chaney Along for T’Ryde. RWD was again to AQWyne Chaney’s Moos On T’Loos. Mrs. Boutwell also found the lovely Wyne AQChaney’s L’l Bit O’Sunshne for WB BOS over a Special. RWB was again Laurado’s Irish Ms Teegan. BOB was Ch. AQWyne Chaney’s Wiley Cody. Cody went on to win his first Group 3rd under Mrs. Boutwell. Thank you.

May 25th Judge Mr. Glendinning was very patient with the puppies that weren’t too anxious to stand. He found his WD BOW in the Open class awarding AQWyne Chaney’s Moos on T’Loos the points. RWD went to Macy’s Blue Santa. WB went to Cameo’s Enchanted Evening bred by Jackie Jordan owned by Margaret Kellogg with RWB going to Wyne AQChaney’s L’l Bit O’Sunshne. BOB was awarded to Ch. Wyne Chaney The Alaskan bred by Susan Wyne & Carol Ann Chaney owned by Jim Norland/Toni Tadolini with BOS going to Ch. BMW Joydane’s Classic Thunder bred by Susan Jackson & Laura Kiaulenas owned by Benny & Jackie Joy & Susan Jackson.

The weekend was gorgeous with only a few sprinkles and some wind. We all made the trip home safely with tired enthusiasm.

Promising Puppies

Smokey Bays Red Hot Pepper, Chili as she’s known to her family, had her first show debut with resounding raves. She’s 7 months now with a very promising career ahead of her. She’s out of Ch. Sandale Wyne’s Razz Ma Tazz by Ch. Smokey Bay’s Simply Red and was bred by Miriam Cope. Tracie Fellows, her owner, did a very admirable job with her first shows.

Another lovely puppy making her show debut was Caprata’s Third Charm owned by Nancy Martin. Charm was bred by Barbara Caprata & Steve Hill and is out of Caprata’s High Light of Dagon by Caprata’s Wild Rose V Ba’ke VO. She had a wonderful time visiting with everyone. Nancy’s grin told the whole story - she’s in love with the puppy!

There’s a very promising litter due June 17th out of Ch. Sandale Wyne’s Razz-Ma-Tazz (Tomas) by Ch. Wyne Chaney’s So Far So Good (Sophie), a group winning bitch. Tomas is out of Ch. Sheenwater Final Count Down by Ch. Kaidane Positively Sandale. Sophie is out of Am/Can Ch. Chaney Sandale Just My Style by Ch. Chaney Calico Rock T-Bird Wyne. We are very excited about this litter as it again blends pedigrees with outstanding breed representatives. The litter is owned by Sue Wyne.

"Outside News"

Jackie Jordan had very exciting circuit in Southern California in the early part of May. Her homebred bitch Alyeska Delta-Billie’s Girl out of Ch. Zarlin Cameo’s Monopoly by Cameo’s Rose of Tralee took WB BOW at the California Great Dane Club Specialty for a 4 pt. Major, her second, under Judge Eric Ringle. We here in Alaska got some very excited phone calls. Jackie then took her to the Great Dane Club of San Diego where she took a RWB. Jackie and Billie’s trip home was actually riding on Cloud 9! Congratulations!

That finishes my report for this quarter. Until next time

NORTHEAST NEWS
by Judy Harrington

I know those of you outside the Northeast who have looked forward to reviewing the happenings in this part of the country might think that I have not been doing my job. I just wanted to assure you all that I have reported exacty what I've heard from the busy people in this part of the country! We have some lovely Danes out there doing some very nice representing of our breed at specialties and in the groups. Drop me a note if you are the owner or breeder and would like to share your good news (or if you happen to be an enthusiastic bystander - that's okay too!). You can email me at: jahyeesss@aol.com

Recently Carolyn Thomas presented the Great Dane in a working breed seminar for the Conn. River Working Group Assoc. It was an outstanding presentation and present were all five colors and an uncropped representative. The comments about the seminar were all rave reviews. This was a well attended educational program by many judges all ready licensed to do the breed and many seeking to apply. This club, for those of you who may not be aware of its existence, is the first all working breed club in this country.

I have also learned to turn a computer on and have found that many people are exchanging news over the internet. Many of the show reports that would have appeared in columns such as this are probably being shared instantly on the evening of the return from shows.

The National is fast approaching and I just received a wonderful mailing with complete information about the upcoming event. It is always a special time of the year and we all have looked forward to getting together throughout the years. I can't help but recall some of the great times at the Westchester Hilton years ago during the Westchester weekend when the National was always held in New York. There was always something special about that weekend. Time marches on and the event that is now the National is in so many ways far superior to the restraints present with the old site, but nostalgia does take over at times.

My parting words for this issue's column will be to all take care and please remember to take the time to keep up with your own health as well as you do with your dogs. There are many that we care about that are fighting difficult battles with health issues and we are hopeful for good news from all of you!

Very best regards,
Judy Harrington
