On Bank Holiday Monday, May 25th, the Great Dane Club held a members' Limited show here at Lodge Farm. We had an entry of 124 Danes with 182 entries, which is good for a show which is limited to members. The weather just managed to keep fine until the show finished and there was a very pleasant garden party atmosphere. Best in Show was Anne Merwick's Drumview In Power.

We have had several very wet and muddy shows this summer - Blackpool was dreadful. Barrie Croft, an all-rounder, was awarding Challenge Certificates for the first time in our breed. He awarded his Bitch Challenge Certificate and Best of Breed to his puppy bitch winner, Sharon Smith's fawn, Fleetdane Forever Mine. This was her first challenge certificate. Homebred, out of Metrella Double Option at Fleetdane and sired by Champion Eppwood Americano. The Dog Challenge Certificate went to Laurence Morgan-Evans black, Champion Vanmore Checkmate. This win gave him his title and he becomes the third Champion of 1998.

Dog Challenge Certificate Winner
Ch. Vanmore Checkmate

Bred by Laurence, he is out of Vanmore Yet Another Secret and sired by the import Hotpoint's in Parade At Vanmore. He is only the 15th black to have received this accolade and the 8th male. It is interesting to note that blacks have taken 88 challenge certificates, won by 39 Danes since 1900.

On Sunday, August 2nd, the Great Dane Club held a Championship Show at Uttoxeter Race Course. The weather was perfect - one of the few good days that we have had in the Midlands this summer. The judges were Monica Stavenborn from Sweden doing bitches and Marion Hipkin (wife of our Treasurer) doing dogs. There was an entry of 244 dogs and bitches.

Best Puppy in Show was Laurence Morgan-Evans Vanmore Diplomat, sired by Dinro Strictly Taylor Made At Vanmore, out of Ch. Vanmore Hopelessly in Love.

The Dog Challenge Certificate winner was Ann Morris' Ch. Arondyke Against All Odds, sired by Ch. Arondyke Arnold The Bouncer, out of Arondyke Aspect Of Love. The Bitch Challenge Certificate and Best In Show went to Pat Buttle's Vanmore Brilliant Disguise At Acuna, sired by Champion Walkmyll Mayo and out of Hotpoint's Brilliant Flare At Vanmore.

Looking forward to seeing you in Texas!
