This column will again begin with fond farewells to some special people and danes. The Alberta Dane community was stunned by the sudden and tragic death of Tammie Olson in early February. A beautiful, vivacious young lady, Tammie had the eye, intelligence and conviction to make a positive contribution to Great Danes as a breeder. Her carefully thought out first litter was due just four short weeks after her death. Sincerest condolences to her husband Scott and family.

Sympathies also go to Cindy Nahnybida and Kevin Cutting, both of whom lost their father, late last year.

Farewell to the following Great Danes, with commiserations to their breeders and owners - Ch Allyndanes Freejack (Dias/Schoenthaler), Ch Striders Kayla Khan (Tait/Denomme), Ch Valbydane Sunglo Smooth Skean (Lanyon/Mignon) and I just learned that Sonia Bernett lost her Ch Alano's Prom Knight, "Jackson".

Best wishes: to Dave Lanyon, of Sunglo and "Molly" fame ... Dave is recovering from leg surgery at home in Pouce Coupe BC. Looking forward to seeing you up and running around the ring again, soon Dave! ..... and to Darcy Stewart who has moved from Winnipeg to Victoria to attend a dog grooming school. Best of luck Darcy, in your studies! Darcy was the editor of DaneData, the Great Dane Club of Canada newsletter. In her absence, that position has been taken on by Randy White, and I'd like to wish him best of luck in this endeavour; the first issue looked great Randy.

Deb Lilelikas, husband Walt and Danes, Action and Angel, made a major move from Ontario, to Virginia. Quite the upheaval, and trip ... so glad to hear that it all went well, especially for 10 year old Angel, who has settled in well. Deb hopes to pursue Action's U.S. title in the spring. Good luck at those shows Deb!

The 1999 show season started with Danes placing in the group already ... Congrats to all these Danes, breeders and owners!!!! ... on the West coast, Georgia Hymmen's A/C Ch Penadane Daynakin's Solitary Man has picked up a G1, and two G3's at the Vancouver show in January. BISS Ch Striders Jagger v Drogheda won two G1's in Thunder Bay for owners Glen & Kelly Tait, new Ch Toyspride Lady Joker took home a G3 from the Argus show handled by Connie Krohn for owners Mary & Jeff Jenner and Toylene Berndt; A/C Ch Drogheda's Keystone Strider won a G2 and G3 in Sault Ste Marie owner handled by Lori Spicer; Scott Johnson's Ch StandbyMe's Believe In Magic has another G3 to her credit as well. Ch. Sicham Black Pearl V Chatelet also won a Group 2 for owner Renee Claude Lessard. Frank and Linda Davey's young boy Seizer, Ch Striders Carpe Diem, is continuing his winning as an adult ... on the other side of the border. His first w/end out in the U.S. Seizer picked up two majors (5 pts, 3 pts) towards his U.S. title. Congrats to the Davey's and co-owners/breeders, Glen & Kelly Tait. Congrats on a Best Puppy in Show win to Striders Ingo Khan and owners Glenda Duhard and Glen & Kelly Tait.

Congratulations! to the breeders and owners of these dogs who recently completed their championships .... Ch Valbydane Keeper of the Torch (Mignon, with handling assistance by Marnie Foreman); the aforementioned Ch Toyspride Lady Joker, and Ch Sicham Black Pearl V Chatelet.

Just starting their show careers, congrats go to the following for their first points ... Lori Spicer's new puppy Kugel (sorry, dont know his full name); Kathleen Kunz' Winterhawk Tejas Star; Donna Ames and Lon St Jean's Birdy. My own Allyndanes Who Spilled The Paint and Allyndanes Painted Lady have points from their first show, and Allyndanes Painted Jewel picked up her first points owner handled by Brenda Theaker.

As always, spring seems to bring new babies ... two and four legged ones. Still waiting for news of Kathy Reinish in Winnipeg, whose second child is expected any day; and in Edmonton, Cindy Powell is also anxious for the arrival of her second. Hope all goes well ladies! For Cindy's sake, I hope her baby arrives before the GDCC Western Division Booster on April 4 .... only labour would keep her out of the ring!

Alison Jones has an exciting litter of black puppies from her Rachel bred to Am Ch Daneboa's Great Uproar. Alison, dont know what you named the girl you have kept, but best wishes for her future! A handsome brother, Karador's Classic Design, aka Archer is enjoying life in Alberta with Marnie Foreman. Looking forward to seeing Archer in the showring this summer. Linda Walker had 8 brindles in early January, out her Ch Richmore Jane's Zara Sheba, sired by Ch Alano's Prom Knight. Kevin & Ivy Cutting have bred their brindle champions Ivydane's Baron von Mistrl to Ch Reann's Noela of Maivar. Jan Edmunds had two litters in November, both sired by Ch Libertesse MojaHakunaMatata. The first litter was out of Ch Allyndanes Orange Crush. The other litter, co bred with yours truly, is out of Allyndanes Pact with the Devil. Jan has kept a fawn female from the first litter, a brindle boy from the second. That should keep her busy over the coming months! Grete Fuchs is also expecting a litter, out of Ch Richmore on Jupiter and Mars sired by Westsummit's Draco. In B.C., Zella Ozeroff had a litter of fawns and brindles. Sire is Ch Daynakin's Xactly as Stated x Ch Allyndanes One C Upon a Time. Zella has kept the fawn female in the litter, and I hear is not in too big a hurry to find a home for a tempting brindle girl either ....

Looking to summer and some specialty shows, the Western Great Dane Club of B.C. specialty in Cloverdale is June 25th; the Great Dane Club of Canada Western Division regional specialty is in Okotoks Ab on July 17; and the joint Association of Great Dane Fanciers/Great Dane Club of Canada National Specialty is the weekend of August 21/23 in Ontario. If anyone wishes information on these please feel free to email me, and I will forward your request to the appropriate club.

It's a beautiful spring day here ... so time to shut this down and enjoy the sun and blue sky. Good luck to all at the shows and with puppies. If anyone has any news they would like to share, please let me know!!!!
