For some years now, we have been attempting, without much success, to get a register of hereditary diseases in Great Danes off the ground. Dr. Jeff Sampson, a leading geneticist in this country is now employed by our Kennel Club to co-ordinate the new DNA Technology on dog breeding.

The Great Dane Club held a seminar on the 31st of October entitled "The Impact of New DNA Technology on Dog Breeding" and the speaker was Dr. Jeff Sampson. The seminar was not very well attended, but we found Dr. Sampson a most wonderful and interesting speaker and he spoke in a language which we could all understand.

It is the intention that every member of all nine breed clubs will receive a questionnaire, which it is hoped will be returned to Dr. Sampson for analysis. The survey will be completely anonymous and will highlight the extent of the various hereditary problems in our breed.

There have only been two Championship shows since we got back from your most enjoyable Specialty. The first was Midland Counties Championship Show held at Bingley Hall, Stafford and judged by Mrs. Ann Foxwell, the breeder of Ch. Auldmoor's Almost An Angel. Ann had drawn an entry of 188 Danes. She awarded the Bitch Challenge Certificate and Best of Breed to Debbie Arbery's fawn Moho's Scarlet Serenade, bred by Debbie and sired by Ch. Auldmoor's Aces of Spies, out of Moho's Themis. This was her second Challenge Certificate. The Reserve Bitch Challenge Certificate was the George's fawn Mohos Dancing Queen. These two bitches are litter sisters.

Hotpoint's Spread The Word At Walkmyll

The Dog Challenge Certificate was my own fawn, Hotpoint's Spread The Word At Walkmyll. This was his first Challenge Certificate. He is imported from Norway, bred by Bonnie Moen (Sorenson), and is sired by Int. Ch. Hotpoint's Here We Go Again and out of Int. Ch. Walkmyll Kate.

The Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate won puppy and was Graham Pratt's fawn Pennardane Pycazik, bred by Pat Patch, sired by Maplemead Make Believe out of Pennardane Pryz Possession.

The second Championship Show was the Working Breeds of Scotland held at Ingleston and judged by Barrie Jefferies. Barrie had drawn an entry of 100 Danes, which is quite good for Scotland. Barrie awarded the Bitch Challenge Certificate and Best of Breed to Pat Buttle's fawn Vanmore Brilliant Disguise At Acuna, bred by Laurance Morgan-Evans, sired by Champion Walkmyll Mayo and out of Hotpoint's Brilliant Flare At Vanmore. This was her second Challenge Certificate and she went on to win Best In Show.

The Reserve Bitch Challenge Certificate was Joyce's fawn Turlum Top Notch, bred by Judy Greig, sired by Champion Arondyke Against All Odds, out of Drumview Made To Measure.

The Dog Challenge Certificate winner was my Hotpoint's Spread The Word At Walkmyll, his second Challenge Certificate and the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate was Sheila Lakeland's fawn Tymonell Tradition from the Junior Class. He is sired by Hotpoint's Spread The Word At Walkmyll out of Ch. Vanmore Forever Young At Tymonell.

Until next time ~
